LIVE ORIGINAL MUSIC ARCHIVE 1991

1991 was a turbulent year for our performance venue. We moved from the Gilbert at the end of February. We had fantastic support from the publican there but the room we were in at the time proved to be too small and was not always congenial for a listening audience. Noise and smoke from the bar saw us losing audiences so we moved to The Lord Melbourne Hotel in March. SCALA member, Tom Trasy, had already started "SLAMM Sundays" in January at The Lord Melbourne. Tom (who designed most of our "Pocket Programmes" in those days) with a few other members wanted to encourage more bands to play for SCALA and the Lord Melbourne was an ideal venue for this. Tom continued to run SLAMM Sundays into May but by that time many of the bands had been integrated into our Wednesday format.

Many people enjoyed Wednesday nights at The Lord Melbourne. It was also, at the time, close to CASM (Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music) and we started to attract some acts from there. However in July we were greeted by a notice on the door of The Lord Melbourne saying that the business had closed! Disaster!

Fortunately, and largely because many people in the local music community wanted to see us continue a live original music performance venue, we were able to move to The Duke of Brunswick in late August with Wendy Joseph taking over programming (from Sean Mangan) for a time.

It should also be mentioned that we organised a concert, SCALA Jukebox, at the National Folk Festival (held in South Australia that year) in March then we put on a major concert, Music From The Source, at Norwood Town Hall in May followed by a series of workshops. However did we manage?
