At the beginning of 1989 we moved to the Duke of York Hotel - upstairs (not ideal for lugging a PA!). At some stage in 1990 we moved downstairs to the beergarden which was much more accessible - and bigger. It took a while for us to establish ourselves back in the city. Kate Battersby took over programming from June. Kate had a number of contacts in the music scene and brought in a number of new acts. She also introduced the "Pocket Programme" which contained a full month's worth of acts and we started an affirmative action policy for female performers. We attempted to include at least one female (even as a member of a group) in our line-up each week. We've continued both of these initiatives ever since although the monthly programme has changed its size and nature from time to time. Later Sean Mangan took over programming from Kate.
We also linked with a regular Sunday venue for local music called Music Works run by an organisation called Adelaide Community Music. In an odd arrangement SCALA was allowed to programme half the MusicWorks programme once a month!
