Claire GurryClaire Gurry is a local singer song writer, poet and writer. Born and raised in Adelaide, but by parents who are both from country towns, she spent a great deal of her childhood roaming the local creeks and parks of Adelaide, and country NW Victoria and the SA Mallee-Murray lands with her brother, cousins and friends. Family sing- a-longs and exposure to gospel and jazz and classical music were a long standing tradition. (She has nearly 30 cousins many of whom have musical interests and careers!!)Many years back, in her teens, Claire played classical guitar and wrote songs and stories for herself, family and friends. Then put this aside to raise children. Family life, work and paying the mortgage took over her life for a while! She kept on singing but at schools and with her own kids while studying education part-time. She listened to a wide range of alternative music and admired her younger brother Paul Gurry's developing musical career (his Silverado song from Rockabilly band Eldorados era is still her favourite) as well as her step mother, Penny Eames, who is a local jazz singer. Paul has always been her inspiration to follow her own dream of singing and playing music too. Claire loves many different styles, being attracted overall by the lyrics and songs of individual musicians and bands rather than one particular genre of music. Ballad singing is a strong undercurrent in her musical choices. She is inspired by the mystic and romantic poets and poetic singer song writers including Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Billy Bragg, Bob Marley, KD Lang, as well as the UK band James amongst many others. She admires a great many locally based and Australian singer song writers, including The Heather Frahn Trio, Raw Honey, Cal Williams Jr, The Borderers, Ruby Hunter and Archie Roach just to name a few! In the past she studied Indonesian music and language, lived in Indonesia and has played in a gamelan orchestra. Claire began singing in local blues/ gospel a capella choirs in 2004 as part of a healing process after a car accident. Then she found her old guitar and began writing her own songs again, reconnecting with poetry and her life long joy of musical expression! Not long after this she bought herself an acoustic electric guitar. She joined SCALA and entered FOOM for the first time in 2007. Claire won a Star Encouragement Award in FOOM 2007 which certainly inspired her to keep writing! Then before too long music became the major part of her life that it is now. She is currently singing in the women's choir Allegria (a new Women with Latitude choir group). Claire is also helping to raise her three active kids and works part time in education resource writing. Singing harmonies is her favourite thing to do and she readily admits that this drives her family and anyone else nearby nuts at times (she suggests they just join in)! Second chances and jumping right in are her motivations (she credits this to friend Alex of The Borderers who sang her this message and advice over and over at their gigs and via their latest CD 'Time for a Change’ through songs like ‘Jump Right In'). Believing that it is never too late to change your life for the better, Claire is emerging as a local musician singer song writer. She has been gaining some confidence through joining Scala, attending workshops, entering FOOM and some recent solo experience singing at The Joiner’s Arms, conferences, private parties and open mikes including the new monthly Her Space nights at Halifax Cafe. Right now she is still busy figuring out how to fit in her own gigs, jamming time and record some songs whilst raising kids and feeding everyone!!! Her children, friends and life experiences provide her with plenty of song writing ideas and a great joy of singing and playing music!! Copyright © Claire Gurry 2008
