Andy and Marta Angels Need (Andy Armstrong and Marta Bayly)
Andy Armstrong - Vocals and acoustic guitar
Recorded and produced by Anthony Stewart at Red Brick Music Inspired by the close harmony of the Everly Brothers, Andy & Marta are a captivating duo who have created their own unique blend of folk, country and acoustic-pop. Andy is an award winning singer-songwriter who has lived and breathed music all his life and is well known in Adelaide from 10 years of writing and performing on Channel 7's children's show The Book Place. Marta, following in the footsteps of Emmylou Harris can 'spot a harmony a mile away' ... and when the voices of these two blend you can feel the magic in the air. Since they joined forces Andy & Marta have been going from strength to strength, releasing their debut album Harmony of One in late 2009 and a follow up live album Platform Soul in 2010. Both releases have received regular airplay on local Adelaide radio stations. Since playing their first gig in 2009 they have cultivated a strong following on the Adelaide folk circuit, getting a great response to their debut at Willunga Fleurieu Folk Festival 2010 and regularly playing popular Adelaide venues like The Wheatsheaf Hotel and SA Folk Centre. "Their sound is impressively reminiscent of the great American folk outfits of the '60s and '70s: The Seekers, Joan Baez, Carole King and Fleetwood Mac" - Music SA review of Harmony of One Angels Need was co-winner of SCALA's 2010 FOOM Song Competition Live Section.

Gareth Bowes Softly, Slowly (Gareth Bowes)
Gareth Bowes - Vocals, guitar Engineered and produced by Anthony Stewart at Red Brick Music. Gareth says: "My relationship with music evolved from earnest appreciation as a listener, to toying with making music as a teenage bedroom project in my hometown of Woodend,VIC. Inspired by the influence of my idols like Cat Stevens, Ben Harper, Jeff Buckley, Daniel Johns and Pink Floyd I moved to Adelaide to pursue a simultaneous study of music and social welfare and was fortunate enough to stumble across Cal Williams Jr, a remarkable musician and teacher and who has been a significant part of my development as a musician myself. Rootsy, bluesy, earthy, moody and laced dirty-mellow, I guess, if I had to describe my music taste, I say I have an instinctual fondness towards massive melodies and playing with the potential of song writing. Music for me is somewhere between a dreamy storytelling and ammunition for pushing boundaries. So now I write and play music whilst fulfilling my passion for learning to understand the uniqueness of our Indigenous communities and the world we live in. It's a worthwhile journey. A journey I am privileged to be sharing with Tim O'Hare, a gifted guitarist and all round inspiration. Recently I wrote a song about my baby niece and won a singer/songwriter competition which is pretty cool. That's led me to write this bio which is also pretty cool." Softly, Slowly was co-winner of SCALA's 2010 FOOM Song Competition Live Section.

Simon Basey Square Mile (Simon Basey)
Simon Basey - all instruments and vocals Square Mile was recorded at Chapel Lane Studios with Gabriel Agostino (engineer) Simon is the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, organ bass player and principal songwriter for The Timbers. As a child, severe asthma meant that he was often confined indoors. His parents introduced him to the music of The Band, Cat Stevens, and The Beatles at a very early age. He began music lessons on the organ in primary school and very quickly spent more time writing his own tunes than practicing those given to him for homework. He studied trombone throughout high school where he played in jazz bands, classical ensembles, and concert bands. He started to show an interest in his father's guitar at around 15 years old and picked up the basics very quickly. Songwriting and composing came very naturally to Simon and, before long, occupied every spare moment he had available. Whilst living in the Adelaide Hills town of Nairne, as a teenager, Simon wrote dozens of songs and composed hours of instrumental music. The ability to play guitar at the same time as playing the organ bass pedals gave him unique tools with which to write. Simon studied Music Technology at Flinders Street School of Music and at the Elder Conservatorium of Music from 2001. Here, Simon was introduced to all aspects of "art music" such as minimalism, serialism, and music concrete. He composed for film, computer games and disklavier, and wrote a quadraphonic piece. Simon began playing in bands in 2001 as an electric guitarist. His first solo gigs were in 2002. For the next few years, Simon was a compulsive composer of songs and instrumentals. A sea change to Hamilton Island in 2006 is where Simon first met Benjamin Roberts. Life has not been the same since. Square Mile was a co-winner of SCALA's 2010 FOOM Song Competition Demo Open Section

Nat Pike No Shoes (Nat and Sienna Pike)
Nat and Sienna Pike - all instruments and vocals Nat and Sienna are a song writing duo based in Adelaide, South Australia. Their tunes range from stunning poetic melodies, to upbeat pop songs with a refreshing melodic edge. One of the aspects that make Nat and Sienna so unique is that they are both lead singers, and they are both multi-instrumentalists. Their self-produced recordings contain piano, guitars, organ and rich vocal harmonies. A typical gig line-up has Nat on vocals and acoustic or electric guitar; and Sienna on vocals and bass guitar or keyboard. However, usually an acoustic set is also included somewhere in their shows. It is their natural sense of harmony that has people likening them to bands like Crowded House and Angus & Julia Stone. Although when asked who their influences are both members agree that they don't try to sound like anybody. "We just play whatever sounds good to us, and it's probably true that there will be traces of other artists we like within our music, but between both of us, we enjoy a huge range of styles." Their influences range from Ben Harper to Harry Connick Jr; Eva Cassidy to Outkast. Although Nat and Sienna have only recently emerged as an original band, they have been performing together as a duo since 2008. No Shoes was a co-winner of SCALA's 2010 FOOM Song Competition Demo Open Section

Jeff Loveday Founder Bounder (Jeff Loveday)
Jeff Loveday - Guitars,Bass,Organ Recorded and produced by Rik Davidson at RDMS Studios Founder Bounder started out being a punk type song. The chord progression came first and it needed to be played fast. I added the theme on the keyboard next. The only lyrics I had were "Founder bounder, quarter pounder" that never progressed, so I decided to make it an instrumental. Founder is my energetic and unpredictable kelpie. With some barking noises and strange percussive effects, this was the demo I submitted to SCALA. For the FOOM recording, local legend Craig Rodda played drums. Thanks to Craig and Rick Davidson at RDMS studio for their support. Founder Bounder was winner of SCALA's 2010 FOOM Song Competition Demo Instrumental Section. lovedayindustries@hotmail.com

The Imports Fortunate Son (Alan O'Toole)
Alan O'Toole - Vocals, Guitar and backing vocals Recorded at Sody Pop studios Brett Sody engineer Recorded in 2003 at Sody Pop Studios, Adelaide, I was asked to come up with an idea of writing a song about letting your parents know that you loved and appreciated them before they eventually passed away and the moment was lost forever. Working class British parenting did not involve too many displays of affection, to the point it was just taken for granted that you were loved. The sentiment of the song is form the point of view of the adult child recognising the difficulty of raising a family in the 1960's and realising that he was indeed, a Fortunate Son.
